The Project 956 Sarych, also known as Sovremenny, class destroyers have been designed to perform anti-ship warfare with secondary air defense capability. They are equipped with eight Moskit supersonic anti-ship missiles, two Shtil/Yohz Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system, two 130mm AK-130 guns, four 30mm six-barrel AK-630, and one Ka-27 ASW helicopter. The Project 956 lead ship was commissioned by the Soviet Navy in 1980. The Project 956A is an improved version of the Project 956 and the Project 956E is the export model being sold to China. The Russian Navy plans call for the withdrawal from active service of these destroyers in the early 2020s due to its propulsion system shortfalls.
